Biology / Walkabout Excursion

On a brisk but sunny Wednesday, our Year 11 Biology students ventured out to Walkabout Wildlife Sanctuary for a day of immersive learning and close encounters with some of Australia’s most iconic native animals. Spirits were high as students explored the bushland setting and engaged directly with a range of wildlife.
Highlights of the day included the unique opportunity to gently pat a koala, hand-feed a wombat. One of which, despite being completely blind, quickly won everyone’s hearts, they observed echidnas, native lizards, snakes, bats and dingoes up close. A particularly memorable moment was the tug-of-war match with a surprisingly strong Tasmanian devil, which brought plenty of laughs and amazement.
Throughout the day, students deepened their understanding of the habitats, adaptations, and behaviours that allow native species to thrive in Australia’s diverse and often harsh environments. They also reflected on the vital importance of conserving our ecosystems and protecting Australia’s rich biodiversity for future generations.
It was a memorable and meaningful day for all, blending curriculum learning with firsthand experience in the field.
