Broken Bay Open Boys Soccer

Last Thursday the open boys’ soccer team travelled down to Manly to face off in a round robin competition against several other CSBB schools. Off the back of their athletics carnival the day before, the 16 boys who had only recently come together a week prior, led by Captain Paul, took to the fields at Cromer Park warming up for the day ahead.

Up against who the boys deemed the favourite of the competition Mackillop Catholic College we faced a rocky start as the school managed to get off an early 1-0 lead before sending us into half time 2-0 down. The boys came back fighting with some great plays down left wing and defensive holds, keeping the score 2-0 as the final whistle blew.

The first of many pep talks as the boys reinvigorated their spirits preparing for their second match of the day this time against Mater Maria Catholic College. Strong starts from both teams created a fantastic game to watch, but some communication troubles left the squad facing a close defeat.

Third game up against the remaining team from our pool St Augustine’s. With some new positioning switching around our wings and defence as well as the determination to demonstrate their talent in front of the representative team selector, the boys put on a great performance that the 2-0 loss did not do justice.

The final game of the day against St Brigid’s was nothing but the closest game yet. The boys wanted a win, and with the girl’s side cheering behind them, they started strong with multiple shots on goal nearly clearing the keeper. Halftime with the score 0-0 exhaustion was apparent from both sides. As the second half was ramping up with each side making full field length plays, an unfortunate goal by St Brigid’s made its way into the net marking a 1-0 loss.

Despite the match results a big congratulations to the boys for how well they played, especially considering many did not know each other and yet had come together to form a team strong enough to go up against teams that had played together for several months.

A further congratulations to Jayden who received the opportunity to play in a trial match for the Broken Bay Dioceses Representative Team.

Congratulations team!
