Year 10 Geography students were investigating environmental change and ecological management at the local Central Coast Wetlands. This location was previously the second largest dairy farm in the southern hemisphere (when it extended as far as the Wyong Milk Factory). These days, it is being restored to its former glory as a native wetland and bushland habitat for sugar gliders, echidnas and powerful owls among others.
Students enjoyed being outdoors and collecting first-hand data about the bird species including the black swans, water bugs such as damsel fly nymph, water quality and soil pH. The day included guest speakers from Central Coast Council and specialist presenters from Waterwatch NSW and the Central Coast Wetlands Trust. Students all got to be geographers for a day and despite the cold polar winds, a great day was had by all!
