In the inaugural year of the School Girls Cup Rugby League Competition, St Peter’s fielded teams across three age groups: U14s, U16s, and Opens. This is an exciting time for Women’s Rugby League, and we were excited to do our bit to showcase our school’s Rugby League talent.
Our U14 Girls secured a convincing victory against a very strong St Joseph’s side, with strong performances from both forwards and backs. Our U14s team, which is made up of girls that are currently enrolled in our new NRL RISE program, took out the win with a solid 44-4 scoreboard, progressing through to the Sydney Metropolitan City Cup Rugby League Finals.
Our U16 Girls faced challenges throughout their training preparation and game with some of their key players missing, allowing St Joseph’s to dictate in both attack and defence, and our girls finishing on the wrong side of the 16-10 scoreline. Whilst we didn’t take the win this year, a major positive to take from this is that majority of the girls were a year young, and with further commitment to training, this team should be a force to be reckoned with next year.
Our Open Girls were met with a hard task of taking on Tuggerah Lakes Secondary College, and with some unfortunate injury concerns leading into the game our preparation was not ideal. However, as these girls have continued to show since Year 7, they weren’t going to go down without a fight. They battled hard against Tuggerah Lakes Secondary College, ultimately winning 14-8 and advancing to the Sydney Metropolitan Finals.
We are incredibly proud of all our Rugby League players and coaching staff, and are excited to see the progression of our younger St Peter’s Rugby League generation with the introduction of the NRL RISE program, which you can find more information via this link https://stpetersdbb.catholic.edu.au/nrl-rise-program/
A massive congratulations to our U14s and Open Girls Rugby League teams on their wins, we wish them the best of luck in the Sydney Metro City Cup Finals!
