On Friday the 1st of September, St Peter’s hosted our M1 rivals, MacKillop Catholic College, Warnervale for the annual Rugby League Challenge. After two terms of preparation through the Targeted Rugby League Program, which is held during sport time, this felt like the 16 Boys and Girls Grand Final. For the last couple of weeks there has been a buzz around school as to who would be picked in the final match day squads, but what we did know is that whoever stepped foot on the field would be prepared.
The atmosphere at the College was electric, with students and staff coming down to Mccudden oval to cheer on the teams. The support from our College crowd paid off, with a clean sweep for our St Peter’s teams!
Following from last year, we already had two shields to defend, but with the addition of the U/14 Boys game there was now a 3rd game the college had to prepare for. Congratulations to the boys on coming away with a 26-18 win, and to Arlo B, who was named player of the match.
Running away 24-10 winners, the 16 Girls never looked like losing. We were lucky enough to have former St Peter’s Alumni and current Australian Jillaroos player Olivia Kernick in attendance to watch the game and offer words of advice to our budding players. Olivia presented the player of the match award, an award honouring her namesake, to Brooklyn L. Thank you to Olivia for finding time out of her busy NRLW schedule to come and support the girls!
The 16 Boys ran out to a packed Mccudden oval, and though a very close game, fought hard to manage a 16-8 win. Captain Brock M fearlessly led in attack and defence and was presented with the inaugural Jack Cogger Medal.
Thanks go out to Olivia Kernick, Jack Cogger, the staff and players from both SPCC and MCC for their contribution to a very successful day. Also, a special thanks to David Boland from Grip Star Socks for their donation of prizes to the players of the match.
