As part of Stage 5’s study of marine mammals this term, our students were lucky enough to partner with ORRCA marine rescue to complete an Introduction to Marine Rescue course.
On the 11th May, students participated in an incursion to learn the theory behind marine rescues from identifying common species to community education. Then on the 18th May, students headed to Terrigal Beach on a beautiful sunny day to put all their theory into practice.
Students completed hands-on training in ‘mammal triage’ and first aid as well as data collection and community safety. However, the most popular part of the day was learning to sling the beached mammals and return them to the (very chilly!) ocean. All students were so convincing in their rescue skills that quite a crowd gathered at Terrigal to watch, believing a real whale rescue was in progress!
All students are to be commended on how they represented the College and a special thanks to Mr Lynch who accompanied us on the day, and to the ORRCA crew for this incredible experience.
